Lasik Eye Surgery Gives You...Freedom to Be and Do More.
Imagine...being able to see the alarm clock when you wake up.
Imagine giving up the hassles of glasses and the rituals of contact lens maintenance.
Imagine that whatever your passion (sports: Baltimore Ravens and Baltimore Orioles, travel, art, or business) how much more skill you could bring to it, how much more fun you could have if you didn't have to overcome the ways that glasses and contacts hamper you. The fogging, the slipping, the lack of peripheral vision. The discomfort caused by the tiniest speck of dust in your contacts.
Lasik Eye Surgery by Jay C. Grochmal, M.D. performed with the world renowned VISX laser can enable you to perform better naturally in the ways that matter most to you.

Jay C. Grochmal, M.D. – Dr. Grochmal received his medical degree from the University of Maryland in 1974. He performed a rotating internship at the U.S. Public Health Hospital in Baltimore, MD from 1974-1975 and his residency at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center in the Department of Ophthalmology from 1975-1978 where he was the chief resident. Jay C. Grochmal, M.D. set up private practice in 1978 as a comprehensive ophthalmologist, but in recent years has been specializing in LASIK. Jay C. Grochmal, M.D. has been trained on the VISX STAR S2 Excimer Laser and Summit Autonomous’ LadarVision for LASIK. He is also on the staff at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center, St. Agnes Hospital, and at Johns Hopkins Hospital in the Laser Vision Center at Greenspring Station. In addition, Jay C. Grochmal, M.D. has traveled on several medical missionary trips to Third World countries for various religious organizations.
Dawn Gill, OD – Dr. Gill completed undergraduate school at Salisbury State University in 1991 and attended the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia where she received her degree in 1995. She has been in private practice since 1995 in Frederick, MD and works on a part-time basis for Jay C. Grochmal, M.D. providing contact lens fittings and other optometric services. She is a member of the American Optometric Association and the Maryland Optometric Association.
There are several forms of laser vision correction available today. The original form of excimer laser treatment is known as PRK (for "photo-refractive keratectomy"). In PRK, the laser energy is applied to the surface of the cornea. The predecessor to PRK was RK (Radial keratotomy) which was the first surgical vision correction procedure to be widely used to correct nearsightedness. Contrary to most people's understanding, does not involve the use of a laser.
Today, however, the most popular variation of excimer laser vision correction treatment by far is called LASIK (for "laser in-situ keratomileusis"). LASIK is our vision correction procedure of choice. Patients greatly prefer the LASIK procedure because it brings them rapid vision recovery. The vision recovery with LASIK is so rapid that most of our patients return to work the very next day!
A NEW, even higher level of surgical precision in the field of vision correction has now arrived at Grochmal Eye Center with the use of the Visx excimer laser upgrade.
The ophthalmologists at Grochmal Laser Eye Center in Baltimore, Maryland are one of the first to use the Visx Star S3 ActiveTrak laser system and LADARVISION in Maryland for LASIK vision correction procedures.
During a LASIK procedure, patients focus on a red light while the surgeon performs the procedure. ActiveTrak technology uses two infrared cameras to compensate for a patient’s slight eye movements that take place during the procedure caused by breathing. In addition, if the patient’s eye moves outside the treatment zone, the laser automatically shuts off. This allows the surgeon to reposition the laser to continue effective treatment of the eye.

How Should You Prepare for the LASIK eye surgery Procedure?
First, you need to chose a doctor. Jay C. Grochmal, M.D. is one of Baltimore, Maryland's leading lasik / laser vision correction eye surgeon, having performed over 2,000 lasik eye surgery procedures, and is an ideal candidate.
Next, schedule a FREE consultation and your LASIK eye surgery procedure date.
Steps to prepare for your lasik eye surgery:
- Contact lense wearers: You'll need to remove your contacts for a period of time prior to the laser vision correction treatment so that your cornea can return to its normal, natural shape.
- Soft-lens contact wearers: Remove your contacts for 1 week before the procedure.
- Hard-lens contact wearers: Remove your contacts for four weeks or longer before your procedure.
Also, it is a good idea to have a friend pick you up after your vision correction procedure is complete.
What Happens on the Day of the Procedure?
You'll want to wear comfortable clothing and remove your makeup and jewelry before you leave.
When you get to the doctor's office, Dr. Grochmal or one of his associates will review your treatment plan. You also may be asked to sign a consent form that states you understand all of the risks, complications, and side effects involved in lasik eye surgery. Ask any last minute questions you might have.
Next, you will be prepped for the procedure. You will sit in a comfortable reclining chair that cradles your head. One of our healthcare practitioners will clean your lashes and your eyelids. You will then receive a mild tranquilizer if you feel nervous and some numbing eye drops. Then the practitioner slides thin metal instruments under your upper and lower eyelids to prop the lids apart and reveal your eyeball.
What Happens During the LASIK eye surgery procedure?
During LASIK eye surgery (laser in situ keratomileusis) a programmed mechanical device slices a flap in your cornea that is thinner than a grape skin. The numbing eye drops prevent you from feeling any pain. The surgeon then lifts and peels back the flap with a tiny laser surgery instrument. You will then hear clicking noises as a laser precisely removes tiny amounts of your inner cornea.
Next, the doctor flips the flap back so it can re-adhere naturally to your eye. The doctor administers anesthetic, anti-inflammatory, and antibiotic eye drops. Often, both eyes are corrected during one visit. Once the procedure is complete, the doctor covers your eyes with transparent shields, and you are ready to go!
How Long Does the Procedure Typically Take?
The LASIK eye surgery procedure typically takes about 10 - 15 minutes to correct each eye. The entire office visit might last about an hour and a half or so.
What Happens During the Recovery Phase?
During recovery, your eyes may feel gritty, irritated, or watery, and they may be more sensitive to light. These sensations typically last from a week to a month. Painkillers, rest, and cold compresses can decrease moderate discomfort.
If you underwent LASIK eye surgery, you may need to wear shields to protect your eyes during sleep for the first few nights following the procedure. You also need to use antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops for about a week. If you had PRK, you wear a bandage and special contacts for about three days while your eyes heal. You may also need to continue to use eye drops for a few months.
Following both types of surgery, adhere to any guidelines your doctor provides to help ensure proper healing. For example, don't wear makeup for about a week after surgery. No swimming for three weeks. No rubbing your eyes for about a month.
Most people can return to work either the next day or within a few days after the procedure.
How Soon Does Your Vision Change?
If all goes well during your lasik surgery, you should notice dramatic visual changes within the first few days following the procedure. Some people report that immediately after the procedure once-blurry items in the doctor's office are crystal clear. But for about two to three weeks your vision may fluctuate.
“I had the LASIK surgery five months ago. After 30 years of wearing glasses and contact lenses, I went from not being able to identify someone 10 feet away to seeing like I did as a child. Jay C. Grochmal, M.D. was precise, professional, and reassuring. He answered all my questions and put me at ease during the entire experience, which I may add, is entirely painless. I could not be more pleased with my choice of LASIK surgery by Jay C. Grochmal, M.D.” – Robert J. Mellendick “Jay C. Grochmal, M.D. is extremely professional and the office staff could not be more pleasant. I have referred several friends to Dr. Grochmal and will continue to do so. LASIK surgery has definitely improved my quality of life.” – Lee Trice “Jay C. Grochmal, M.D.’s experience and confidence level regarding the LASIK surgery quickly dispelled my initial apprehension. Having the surgery was one of the best things I’ve done for myself. My vision is excellent and not having to use glasses for routine tasks, such as driving or watching TV, has been great. Thank you to Jay C. Grochmal, M.D. and his staff!” – Kevin Meyd “I’ve been enjoying my 20/20 vision for two years now. Thanks to LASIK (monovision), Jay C. Grochmal, M.D. corrected one eye for close vision and one for distance vision – the best of both worlds. For the first time since I was six years old, I am able to read and see in the distance without glasses or contact lenses. It has been extremely helpful to me in my professional life as an associate professor in Health Education and a scuba diving instructor for my own business.”

What is LADARVISION®?
No two eyes are exactly alike. Alcon has introduced LADARVision®- a new generation of laser vision correction helps optimize laser vision correction for both patient and surgeon.
Vision is sometimes defined as the ability to see beyond the obvious. From its inception, Alcon - Summit Autonomous, the creator of the LADARVision® Excimer Laser System, has been dedicated to a distinctly different technology, which combines active tracking and small-beam corneal shaping - two features previously unavailable in the United States. This system can be used by doctors to benefit millions of people worldwide.
This critical area of eye tracking had its genesis in many years of contracted research and development for the Strategic Defense Initiative and the National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA). More than $35 million above the original government research has been invested to develop this technology and its application to excimer laser vision correction.
LADARVision® represents a new way to approach laser vision correction - with confidence. Confidence that LADARVision will enhance the entire laser vision correction experience...before, during, and after the procedure. Confidence that the LADARVision® eye tracking system (LADARTracker™) and small-spot laser beam is designed to achieve high quality visual outcomes and minimal post-surgical problems.
